Oral Surgery - Reconstruction/Plastic

The course highlights diagnostic methods and different surgical treatment options for common orofacial and ear, nose and throat (ENT) problems such as fractures of the mandible and maxilla, dental and palatal problems, chronic otitis externa, reconstructive procedures and much more. To improve your surgical skills lectures are alternated with practical application under qualified supervision.

Course goal:
This module prepares the general practitioner theoretically and practically to confidently deal with common orofacial and ENT diseases, both medically and surgically. Many of the procedures taught you will be able to perform in your own practice, but the course will also highlight which patients are best referred to a specialist.

Theoretical topics:
Principles of Surgery with emphasis on orofacial and ENT surgery - Incision & excision of tissue, haemostasis, handling and care of tissues, closing with sutures. Hard palate surgery – Palate defects, langenbeck technique, bone healing, overlapping double flap technique, split palatal U-flap technique, oronasal fistulae, prosthesis. Surgery to correct brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome -, stenotic snares, overlong soft palate, laryngeal hypoplasia, laryngeal collapse, laryngeal sacculectomy. Maxilectomy & Mandibulectomy techniques– Diagnosis, incisional biopsy, excisional biopsy, therapeutic decision making, ostectomy and osteoplasty, vestibular mucosal-submucosal flap, Alveolar mucosal periosteal transposition flap, palatal mucosteal flap, rostral mandibulectomy technique, PAD on surgical specimen, postoperative management and complications, cosmetics. Reconstruction of facial structures – Nasal plane tumors/resection/reconstructive surgery, crescentic nasojugal flap, tension relieving techniques, U-flap, H-flap, caudal auricular artery, superficial temporal artery, facial artery axial pattern flap, omocervical axial pattern. Ear surgery – Othaematoma, aurical diseases, Pinna amputation cat. Ear surgery; lateral wall resection, vertical and total ear canal ablation, ear canal tumors, lateral and ventral bulla osteotomy, surgery ear canal polyp. Jaw fracture repair techniques – indications for repair, biomechanics and principles of jaw fracture repair, bone implants, orthopaedic wiring, methods of repair, pharyngotomy intubation, intermaxillary fixation, tape muzzle, upper jaw fracture, mandibular fracture, bonding canines, intraoral acrylic splint.

Practical/interactive procedures:
All of the theoretical topics mentioned above and discussed in class that can be performed on cadavers will be practiced under supervision of both lecturers during wetlab sessions. This will give you plenty of opportunity to try out new techniques and improve your skills and confidence with the help of the instructors.

Dr. Cecilia Gorrel
BSc, MA, Vet MB, DDS, MRCVS, Hon FAVD, Dipl EVDC, European and RCVS-recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry.
Cecilia Gorrel is a board-certified specialist in Veterinary Dentistry. She runs a Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery Referral service in the UK. Cecilia is also an Independent Research Consultant investigating oral diseases in the dog and cat. She is active as an international lecturer and has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications, including the books ‘Veterinary Dentistry for the General Practitioner’, ‘Veterinary Dentistry for the Nurse and Technician’ and ‘Saunders Solutions in Veterinary Practice – Small Animal Dentistry’.

Dr. Gert ter Haar
DVM, PhD, DECVS
Gert ter Haar graduated from Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 1997, with differentiation in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. After his internship in the Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals at Utrecht University he undertook a residency in Small Animal Surgery in the same Department from 1998 to 2001. Since then he has been a member of the staff of this Department as Assistant and later Associate Professor in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) diseases and diseases of the upper airways. In 2002 he qualified as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and he became head of the Department of ENT in 2003. Also in 2003 he became the secretary of the International Veterinary Ear, Nose and Throat Association (IVENTA), a specialist association affiliated with the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA). His research on hearing in dogs led to his PhD thesis, a 220-page book entitled “Age-related hearing loss in dogs” and the oral defence of his thesis at Utrecht University, October 27, 2009. On the same day he became President of the IVENTA and the representative of the IVENTA to the WSAVA. He joined the Royal Veterinary College in London in December 2011 and currently works there as a senior lecturer in soft tissue surgery and head of the ENT Division.
